In 2002, my second child Kaitlyn was born with cerebral palsy, cataracts, a seizure disorder, and developmental delay. For Kaitlyn, this meant she would be non-verbal, have limited mobility, and greatly impaired eyesight causing a myriad of developmental delays. The seizure disorder required years of monitoring and changing medications until they were finally under control. We spent years fundraising for Kaitlyn’s trips to Costa Rica and Panama for costly yet useful stem cell treatments.
Caring for her ever-changing needs has been on on-going process. Our family was prepared to love Kaitlyn and all the challenges her diagnosis brought, however at the time, we did not know what kind of support was available. We had no idea what type of equipment was available that could help Kaitlyn be independent. While some needs have remained consistent, we certainly couldn’t think in advance how much her needs would change throughout each stage of her life. I’ve researched funding options in the form of grants, medical insurance, special government programs, private pay agreements, and the generosity of family and friends.
As a result, the quality of Kaitlyn’s life and her overall ability and level of independence has greatly exceeded all my initial expectations. Although still non-verbal, she can communicate through a talk device and sign language. In doing so, is able to communicate a “wicked” sense of humor. She bakes and even bikes with friends! Most recently, she has overcome her fear of dogs and we are able to have a new puppy who she enjoys very much. Kaitlyn attends a local public school as well as weekly therapies addressing her daily living skills. As a mom, I’ve enjoyed biking and swimming with Kaitlyn as well as shopping and doing crafts (Kaitlyn’s way of course.) When Kaitlyn was born, I was concerned I would miss out on some of the things all us moms hope to do with their daughters. Through finding the right people and interventions, I’ve been able to enjoy a wonderful mother-daughter relationship with my extremely funny girl!
My professional career started in public accounting, assisting small business with taxes and bookkeeping, preparing individual taxes and auditing. I then moved to the corporate world of accounting where I worked as Chief Financial Officer for a company who provided complex rehab equipment (power and manual wheelchairs, adaptive strollers, walkers, standers, hygiene equipment, seating and positioning devices). Our complex rehab business saw a growing need – people who needed equipment also needed support in other areas such as transferring in and out of equipment, getting in and out of their home, transporting their equipment and being able to move around their home safely.
I became a Certified Environmental Access Consultant (C.E.A.C) to help families like mine (who desire to keep their loved one at home safely). I understand how important it is to have an unbiased advocate as part of your medical team. I also understand how quickly cost can add extra strain and burden to any family. With my expertise, together we can find the most financially responsible way to make your home aesthetically pleasing while functioning in the best possible way for your client or loved one. I am here to help you!
